Role of the Chairperson
General Description
The Chairperson should ensure that all Board members who have taking up office, are fully briefed on the terms of their appointment, and on their duties and responsibilities. They should also be given access to a copy of the Constitution, Policy Manual, Three Year Plan, and any other relevant background material such as the latest financial plan and annual reports and accounts.
The Chairperson has particular responsibility, with the President, for providing effective strategic leadership on matters such as formulating a promotional strategy, representation in the media, and encouraging high standards of propriety, and promoting efficient and effective use of staff and other resources throughout the organisation.
The Chairperson should ensure that the Board meets at regular intervals throughout the year, that these meetings are well advertised and well attended, that the matter for discussion is prepared and distributed in advance, and that minutes of meetings accurately record decisions taken and, where appropriate, the views of individual Board members. Arrangements should be made to review from time to time the activities and effectiveness of the Board, and the contributions made by the Chairperson and the individual Board members. Board members are expected to make every effort to attend Board meetings.
